What is closer breed of the dog to the gray wolves, Siberian huskies or Alaskan malamutes?

Acording to the canine genome project there are 13 dogs (down from the original 14) that are genetically divergent from modern breeds and closest to wolves in DNA. Both Huskies and Malamutes are on that list. Which is closest I don't know. Here's the entire list;
Basenji, Saluki, Afghan hound, Samoyed, Canaan dog, New Guinea singing dog, dingo, Chow Chow, Chinese Shar Pei, Akita, Alaskan malamute, Siberian husky and American Eskimo dog.

The only study I know of which might answer this question found that all the northern breeds like samoyed, siberian husky and malamute but also finnish spitz, afghan hound, basenji and a number of other dog breeds have some DNA which is most similar to the common ancestor of modern dogs and wolves. But they don't mention the relationship between those basal species. Maybe their data doesn't allow such detailed differentiation. On the published tree it looks like the Shar-Pei, Basenji and Akita are the most original breeds, they don't show the nordic sled dog breeds.

Neither. Domestic dogs all have the same common ancestor as wolves.

Dogs are not decendents of wolves.They are a sub-species who share a common ancestor.

Digs didn't automatically develop into breeds. Man took the friendliest wolves, kept and bred them. Eventually you had a domestic generic dog. They began breeding for specific working abilities, such as hunting/tracking, guarding, and herding. As they bred for those specific traits, the dogs began to develop into distinct types (still not a breed). It took many many generations of breeding and selecting for Sistine characteristics to develop them into separate breeds.

Many of the first breeds are extinct. They became obsolete as other breeds were developed who could do the job better. Some breeds became obsolete because technology advanced and the dog was no longer needed for the job.
If dalmatians were not so appealing as pets, they are an example of a modern breed that would have become extinct when their job became obsolete
