There is a word for lying when you are trying to preserve someone's feelings. I don't know what the word is, what it starts with, or anything. I just know that I heard a word before, and when I asked what it meant, it was explained to me that it meant "lying to protect someone from the truth" or something like that. If you know words that mean this or are similar in meaning, please help me! Thanks!

It's like a special, sophisticated word. I know that it isn't just white lie or lying. It's a more diverse word, used in better writing and stuff. It was a pretty long word too, but I just can't recall what it is.

It's really hard to know what word you mean, but I wonder if it isn't "prevaricate," which means not telling the truth by not quite answering a question. Like maybe half answering it but doing so in a way that misrepresents what the truth is. Of course, you could also mean equivocate or fabricate or misrepresent or tergiversate.

There are actually a lot of good words for lying considering that it is rather a bad practice to get into.

Hope this helps!

If it doesn't affect anything else it's a white lie.

If it goes beyond just the one person, it's a lie.

Do you have access to a thesaurus? Looking up lie would have it. If there is such a word. It's not ringing any bells for me.
