Why doesn't my crush text me first more often?

So I've been liking this guy for a while now, and we used to talk a lot but then our schedules changed and we are no longer in the same study hall. I have his number and we do text from time to time. Of 8 conversations he's started 2. And from I've gathered when he starts then we talk a lot longer and learn a lot more about each other than when I do. Does he not text me more because he doesn't like me?
