Why do you think Plato made up the story of Atlantis?

It was a warning to his fellow Greeks to appreciate what they had and not become too corrupt or arrogant. In his dialogue Critias, Plato says: "the Atlanteans became corrupt ...when the divine portion began to fade away, and became diluted too often and too much with the mortal admixture, and the human nature got the upper hand, they then, being unable to bear their fortune, behaved unseemly, and to him who had an eye to see grew visibly debased, for they were losing the fairest of their precious gifts; but to those who had no eye to see the true happiness, they appeared glorious and blessed at the very time when they were full of avarice and unrighteous power." Critias then says that Zeus, the god of gods, seeing the corruption of the Atlanteans, determined to chastise them. He destroys Atlantis, submerging it under the sea.

First off Plato was a well traveled man as well as him being a great Philosopher, Also it you took the time to read about Plato works and his travels You would also know that he saw the wonders of Atlantis.............

Plato probably elaborated on a local story of an island, Thera, disappearing in a volcanic eruption and tidal wave to fit his story and philosophy.

No. But It's about what was the actual place.

This as Plato himself never saw it, but had it described to him.

Because he was a storyteller, and that's what storytellers do.

It's the same reason Metropolis, Westeros, Middle Earth and the Galaxy Far Far Away were invented. Plato wasn't the first or the last.

He did not make it up - it was destroyed by a volcano / meteor / earthquake

I don't think he did. It was already an established (and developed ) myth when he wrote.

A time traveler was describing the technology of a VERY real place, with homes lit by electricity, a nation defended by nuclear weapons, all the wonders of a place called not Atlan TIS, but Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 1958.

He made up the part about it sinking beneath the waves.
