You must express both terms in common denominators. Since 8 is the bigger denominator you have to convert the 2 to an 8. In this case, 2 can be multiplied by 4 to equal 8.

1/2 is the same as 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8. Since the 4/8 has the common denominator as 7/8, use the 4/8 to represent the 1/2.

Now: 4/8 + 7/8 = 11/8 (as others have said). You can express this as an improper fraction, leaving it as 11/8 OR you can reduce it in terms. Since 8 goes into 11 once, you have at least ONE WHOLE UNIT. In other words, you have a solid 1 in front of the rest of the fraction. Do the division work. 11 ÷ 8 = 1 with a remainder of 3. That remainder is expressed as 3/8. So the answer is 1 3/8.

Fractions can be confusing. But if you practice at it over and over eventually fractions become as easy as breathing. You WILL get there if you put in the effort.

Stay focused on your education.

(1/2) + (7/8)

= (4/8 ) + (7/8)

= (4 + 7)/8

= 11/8

= 1 and 3/8
