How to make a child teddy bear last longer?

I have a teddy bear that I had since I was a baby back in 2000, I'm 16 years old now and I just found my old teddy bear, it's a small bear holding a heart that says *hugs and kisses* I don't need the bear anymore so I'm going to give it to my baby cousin who was born about a year ago, I took the bear and made sure it's in good shape, but I found some loose peices of yarn hanging from the bear, but I think the bear is in good shape, but just in case before my baby cousins birthday how can I make the bear last longer?

I used to just toss it in the washing machine every now and then. It lasted me a good 10 years (1998-08) Now it Just sits on my shelf in a very good condition.

Don't disrespect your cousin. Don't give a used teddy bear as a birthday present, that's not nice.

Put it in a ziplock bag and store it in a cool, dark place. If you have any respect for that bear, you'd keep it from degrading any further and preserve it as a memento.
Let your cousin get his own bear that will be unique to him, not just some hand-me-down.
Besides, there's no guarantee he'll care much about it to keep it out of the landfill.
