In contact process, SO₃ is formed. SO₃ can react with water to give H₂SO₄ as shown in the equation below :
SO₃ + H₂O → H₂SO₄

However, the above reaction is very exothermic, and the heat released in the reaction can vaporize the H₂SO₄ formed to become a mist of H₂SO₄. This is dangerous.

To make it safer. 1 mole of 98% H₂SO₄ is used to firstly absorb 1 mole of SO₃ formed to give 1 mole of oleum (H₂S₂O₇), which is then diluted with water to give 2 mole of 98% H₂SO₄. This avoids the formation of a mist of H₂SO₄.
