Molar mass of CuSO₄ = 63.5 + 32.1 + 16×4 = 159.6 g/mol
Molar mass of CuSO₄•xH₂O = 159.6 + n(1×2 + 16) = (159.6 + 18n) g/mol

Mass ratio CuSO₄ : CuSO₄•xH₂O
159.6 : (159.6 + 18x) = 8.58 : 9.55
159.6 : 18x = 8.58 : 0.97
18x * 8.58 = 159.6 * 0.97
x = 159.6 * 0.97 / (18 * 8.58)
x = 1

Number of water molecules associated with each CuSO4 formula unit = 1

n1 = n(CuSO4·x H2O) = 9.55/177.6 = 0.05377 moles

n2 = n(water) = 0.05389 moles
so
x = 1
