With reference to oxygen, the reducing property means the property of removal oxygen from an oxide.
For example, carbon reactions with copper(II) oxide on heating to give copper and carbon dioxide.
C + 2CuO → Cu + CO₂
Obviously, carbon removes oxygen from copper(II) oxide, and thus carbon exhibits reducing property.
