General College Chemistry - How many sigma bonds are in 125g of sodium acetate? (CH3CO2Na)?
I m getting something like 6.6x10^24 bonds, but the answer key we were given says it s supposed to be 5.49x10^24
The only way I can see them getting this number is if they didn t count the double bond and said the molecule only has 6 sigma bonds in it. Correct me if I m wrong but double bonds are comprised of one sigma and one pi bond right? So the number of sigma bonds in this molecule should be 7 total. Please help!

Sigma and pi bonds are both kinds of covalent bonds. The bond between Na and O is ionic ... it is neither sigma nor pi. ... There are 6 sigma bonds per molecule
125g X (1 mole/82g) X (6.02 x 10^23 molecules / mole) ....
X (6 sigma bonds / molecule)
= 5.506 x 10^24 sigma bonds
