Seriously?! I'm sorry but I don't think you have a brain in your head, so put down any kind of weapon you might be holding! Then, sit down and really think about your question. Now answer this question... How the hell do you shoot someone with a knife? As gun shoots bullets. A knife cuts things! Stupid!
2016-02-23 11:25 pm
What you meant was, "can I shoot someone who is threatening me with a knife"?

The answer is, "it depends".

If you are truly threatened i.e. you have no other recourse for retreat, or if it within your residence most states would not charge you if you shot someone in self-defense.

Some states have extended the right of 'self-defense' to the point where you have no requirement to retreat i.e. 'stand your ground law'.

No.. But its totally legal to stab someone with a gun
2016-02-23 11:23 pm
Knives are usually used for stabbing. I've never heard of shooting someone with a knife. Where do you get shooting knives?
2016-02-24 12:04 am
Yes you can. Even if, once you draw your gun, he drops the knife and begs for mercy, you can still shoot him. It's the principle in the matter: he threatened you with a knife, you need to show your dominance and superiority in the situation. It's an alpha male thing- he tried to hurt your pride, even though he is no longer a threat you need to eliminate him. After all, he is going to be the dead guy with a knife by his hand- it's your word against his. Open and shut case.

No, you can't use a knife to shoot someone. If someone is CURRENTLY using a knife to threaten you, they are presenting deadly force, and deadly force would be appropriate in self defense.
2016-02-24 7:27 pm
Standard police training- a guy with a knife inside of 10 foot zone is likely to harm or kill you IF you don't use pistol and shoot attacker until he drops. New York City police training security films have several knife attackers injuring and couple kills shown to police trainees- and at least one was serious injury to police officer and escape of suspect- officer did NOT shoot in time, drew pistol and threatened but didn't shoot until attacker had gotten in first slice, shot didn't hit vital area and officer had hand cuts, body stuck from attacker who rapidly walked away with officers gun, other stolen goods. Filipino security film has officer fire 6 rounds and miss or warning shots- knife man kills officer and walks away. Most states will consider a knife carrier 'armed' and use of lethal force acceptable against 'armed' felon, threat to life obvious. 'Can' shoot? 'Allowed legally' to shoot? Precise language and less spell checker would help clarify post.
2016-02-23 11:22 pm
Only if you can find such a weapon.
2016-02-24 2:39 pm
1. You can not shoot a knife.
2. If someone is approaching you with a knife and
is posing a threat. Fire the weapon until you hear
it go click click. Then reload.
2016-02-23 11:23 pm
I don't think you can load a knife; But sure why not shoot him in the leg.
2016-02-24 4:11 am
Are you mentally prepared to make someone dead and live with that haunting you the rest of your life? You are considering potentially taking someone's life who has a wife and kids and leaving his kids without a father so consider it carefully. As armed security we are taught don't draw your weapon unless you intend to shoot and don't shoot unless you intend to kill. Legally if you believe your own life or somebody else's life is in immediate danger, then yes, you can shoot in self defense. If you have any other course of action such as backing away and avoiding having to shoot the person, I suggest you take it. Shooting someone should be last resort when there are no other possible options.

Keep in mind, even if you are justified in shooting someone, you may still be arrested and need a lawyer to get the charges dismissed and even if you aren't charged with a crime or found "not guilty" in the court of law you may still face a law suit brought on by the person's family.
2016-02-24 4:58 am
Well I wouldn't shoot someone with a Knife. Since for the fact it is highly implausible (And, probably not likely), maybe stabbing someone with it... And, yes you can I guess harm someone in the act of self defense, but remember the man/woman has to hit first, and there needs to be witnesses to the supposed threatening.
2016-02-27 5:22 am
Actually since it looks like you're posting from Canada (or at least post a lot of questions about Canada), the answer is probably no.

The legal standard for self defense is "reasonable force" and whether you believe the person is an "imminent threat." You have to think that he's going to kill or harm you or someone else right now, or very soon (ie. within the next few seconds).

When you're out and about, unless you're way up north and have a prospector's permit, you're not going to be able to carry a loaded handgun. So, if some guy comes out of the shadows and threatens you with a knife, shooting him won't be an option.

Even if you were transporting the a gun in your car (eg. you were going to or coming back from the range) and had some loaded magazines handy, even if you shot the guy in self defense, you'd be looking at charges under the firearms act. When transporting a gun, it has to be unloaded, in a locked case with a trigger or cable lock. Even if you drove a truck and had everything in the passenger cabin, you'd have to unlock the case, unlock the gun, load the gun and fire it -- this would take roughly at least 30 seconds. Much longer than that if you drive a car, as it'd have to be locked in the trunk. The crown would argue that if you had enough time to do that, he wasn't an imminent threat or that the guns and ammo weren't properly squared away for transport.

The only circumstance I can see where someone might have gun ready to shoot an imminent threat is if you're out in the woods hunting or camping somewhere remote. It's violating some safety rules to have one in the chamber but doesn't take long to rack the slide or toggle the bolt on a rifle or shotgun. You can be walking around with a loaded gun for hunting or defense against wild animals (we live in a country where bears eat people). Of course, if the police ask you have one of those has to be the reason why you had the gun available to shoot him, and it's very unlikely for you to get mugged out there.

Then at home? Shooting someone is going to be awkward there too. Again, guns can't legally be stored loaded like in the US. Guns and ammo have to be locked up separately; if not in separate locked cases or safes, then the ammo must be separated from the guns by a locked container.

So by the time you unlock the gun cabinet, unlock the gun lock, and unlock the ammo box and loaded the gun, you'd probably be dead if it was an immanent threat. The police and crown would argue that if you could gain access, either it wasn't an imminent threat, or you weren't storing your guns and ammo properly.

Better to bash his skull in with an aboriginal statue. At least there's a precedent in Canadian law :-P

Don't you wish you had put 'with a knife' at the end of the sentence?
2016-02-24 12:32 am
That is worse than stabbing them with a gun. You might get a walk with that, so hopefully there are witnesses who can back up your claim of being threatened to the point that you were concerned for your life.
2016-02-26 8:34 pm
depends on the circumstances. The mere fact he has a knife does not justify shooting him. What if it is in his pocket? How about if he is in a wheelchair. You can avoid danger by stepping aside. Your LIFE must be in imminent danger to justify deadly force.
2016-02-24 9:36 pm
If someone pulls a knife on you they have started a life threatening incident. You are well within your rights to draw and fire on them in deadly self defense. Start with center body as usual in training drills.
2016-02-24 8:39 pm
Legally its "lunging range" to answer your real question..........but couldn't resist this either........

2016-02-24 11:04 am
You cannot shoot a knife.
2016-02-26 1:15 am
2016-02-24 3:44 am
Yes you can but the trigger is very hard to find on most knives
But if its the other guy with a knife whether you can shoot him or not depends a lot on where you live, gladly, where I live yes you can
2016-02-23 11:22 pm
stab
2016-02-29 10:22 pm
No. You could possible stab them with a knife or maybe shoot them with a gun but no, you cannot shoot someone with a knife.
2016-02-29 7:49 am
No but you can stab him with a gun.
2016-02-27 8:15 am
Lmao
2016-02-27 5:53 am
How do you shoot someone with a knife? I'm all ears.
2016-02-27 5:52 am
No, you cannot because knives are for stabbing and guns are for shooting!

It really depends on the situation. Is there actual threat that you could be killed or seriously injured. Likewise, if you don't shoot them, could your life be at risk?If so, you are able to kill them in self defense. But if not, you could be charged with either manslaughter or murder.
2016-02-26 11:01 pm
Seriously? Is your knife loaded with bullets? If someone is threatening you - you have the RIGHT to defend yourself.
2016-02-26 9:47 pm
If he's physically harming you yes but it's stabbing not shooting unless you use a gun.
2016-02-26 5:25 pm
Il stab you with a gun for asking this dumb question.
2016-02-26 2:50 pm
I think the question was meant to be "Can I shoot someone, who is threatening me with a knife?" I'm dying laughing at this.
2016-02-26 1:45 pm
No. Wait until he stabs you. Then shoot him.
2016-02-26 10:59 am
No. knives can't fire bullets.
2016-02-26 6:34 am
You can't shoot someone with a knife, you need a gun.
2016-02-26 4:02 am
I would think so if that person was close enough to hurt you. You do have the right to defend yourself. If the person was 10 feet away or more, I would think twice before shooting.
2016-02-26 3:09 am
It depends on the circumstances, if it's a person that broke into your home then yes, do you have a carry permit? If you have a means of escape without being hurt then no, if you're defending yourself or another person who's life is in immediate danger and you have a carry permit then yes. But you should probably check with your local law enforcement
2016-02-26 1:12 am
No, you can't shoot someone with a knife. You shoot people with a firearm, you silly doofus.
2016-02-26 1:03 am
Are you, what is considered, a retard?
2016-02-25 7:34 pm
No such thing.. Can't shoot with a knife.
2016-02-25 6:09 pm
Ya
2016-02-25 6:08 pm
Seriously? You should shoot anyone holding anything that's legitimately threatening your life. (Assuming you didn't provoke them and it's all in self defense).
2016-02-25 4:46 pm
Sure, if you can get the knife to shoot. lol!
2016-02-25 3:50 pm
shoot them with a knife
2016-02-25 3:16 pm
You must genuinely fear that he is going to use that knife on you if you do not stop him. This will be decided by the grand jury based on the facts and circumstances.
2016-02-25 3:09 pm
No, but, you can 'stab' them with it.
2016-02-25 3:08 pm
No, it is not possible to shoot someone with a knife.
2016-02-25 12:31 pm
Hmmmm...have your broken into the other guys house?
2016-02-25 10:22 am
If he's black it's ok, you'll get away with it. In fact, you'd still getaway with it even if he was 'armed' with a spoon.
2016-02-25 5:36 am
no
2016-02-25 5:29 am
Is there a knife gun?
2016-02-25 5:09 am
Are you an American, if you are then he'll yeah, if not then he'll yeah, but you might go to jail for awhile but you lived, inless the dudes a cop then that might be a problem
2016-02-25 4:48 am
ask a lawyer.
2016-02-25 4:39 am
Not a good idea. Most spring loaded knifes that shoot do not have a powerful spring for this
2016-02-25 3:28 am
I think it would be kind of difficult to attach the knife to a bullet.
2016-02-25 3:23 am
As long as you say you were standing your ground. It worked for George Zimmerman.
2016-02-25 2:13 am
Not a good idea. Most spring loaded knifes that shoot do not have a powerful spring for this. So are used as a distraction not to kill. You must be very close to use them. 1 meter or less. Be willing to move in fast or turn & run once shot.
2016-02-25 2:11 am
No. You can not shoot people with knives. You need a gun. Knives don't shoot, guns do.
2016-02-25 1:07 am
Throw, but not shoot.
2016-02-25 12:52 am
Sounds like you have a new invention.. A knife with bullets
2016-02-25 12:48 am
It depends on how close the person wielding the knife is to you. Usually if the person with the knife is within 10 feet of you, you are in danger of being seriously injured or killed in that zone. The person could be on you in a second or two at the most. Things change if the knife is in a sheath or pocket, and isn't being held but just mentioned by the attacker. If the knife is in their hand(s), then an attack could happen quickly. Probably the best thing to do is ask a member of the police department what this situation would dictate as far as defending yourself.
2016-02-25 12:40 am
As long as you are not in california.
2016-02-24 9:08 pm
It depends on the laws of your state, It had better be a very vicious criminal or a serial killer who is doing it and you had better be running away because some states are too dumb to adopt stand your ground and castle laws, and you had better be running the **** away when you shoot.
2016-02-24 7:47 pm
Yes, but only if he threatens to stab you with his gun.
2016-02-24 4:47 pm
No, he has to attack you. Then If you have a knife that shoots, you may shoot him with it.

And for all the ignorant out there, yes there are knives that can shoot.
2016-02-24 12:49 pm
No. You would have to use a gun. Knives won't shoot ????
2016-02-24 10:55 am
You would need to make your decision a lot faster than using yahoo answers if you were up against that problem in real life.
2016-02-24 3:14 am
Guns and rifles shoot; knives stab or slice. If one's life is truly threatened you have the right to defend yourself.
2016-02-24 1:19 am
Rule of thumb:
If you care about the law at the time of the shooting, then no you can't.
If the situation is such that you don't care about the law, you're only concerned about your safety, then yes you can.

(Its better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.)
2016-02-24 2:01 pm
If it is a threat, make note of it by phone or something. Then u can get police envolved. But if not, u don't want to live with the idea that u killed someone.
2016-02-24 5:10 am
I will shoot him in the legs and call the cops if he comes after u you with a knife that will give you more time to call the cops
2016-02-25 11:32 pm
Do you have a ballistic knife? It's a knife that "shoots" the blade with a spring when you press a button.

If you feel that a person is posing an immediate threat to you and that you will suffer extreme bodily harm or death, fire away.
2016-02-24 8:09 am
bunch of incompetent idiots misunderstood my question
2016-02-26 7:29 am
You said "threatening me" and not "attempting to kill me" so you would be wrong to shoot them and would do time for sure, and maybe life if you killed them (even mistakenly).

Generally a knife fight is for another knife. A gun fight is another gun.
But sometimes threats are vacant (meaningless) so let it go. If someone does come after you then use your cell phone. Also go places with friends instead of alone. I'm just saying there are ways to hold off threats. If you have a problem to report then call the police (but never make a false report or something vacant, it must be real and you must be really afraid). You can place a restraining order on that person but it might make them mad. Consider first what the conclusion would be of anything in life before you act on it.
