If you want to make sure you don't lose anything it is best to use a external hard drive to back up your files. If you don't you stand a chance of losing everything. I have seen these things fail and everything is lost.

First thing is to make a backup of everything you want to save. Working on the theory that you have all your files and pics stored in your Library folders (please tell me you do) it will be easy to back everything up. I prefer to make a straight copy of the folders to a thumb drive or external drive. Plug in the backup medium and then open My Computer. Right click your backup medium and click open new window. Move both the windows so they are side by side, I prefer My Computer to be on the left and the backup medium window to be on the right. In the My Computer windows, on the left hand side you will see a panel with a scroll bar. Scroll up until you see Libraries. Under that you should see your 4 folders. Click the little symbol that looks like an arrow beside Documents and it should open showing My Documents. Right click it and then click copy. Now move to the backup medium window and right click once and then click paste. This should copy the entire folder to your backup medium. This could take some time depending on your medium your using the amount of files you have. Repeat these steps for My Pictures, My Music, and my Videos.

If you want to try getting rid of the viruses follow the info below.

You didn't give much info so here is a generic answer. This will cover checking for viruses and how to get rid of them. It explains how to scan using safe mode or how to make a bootable thumb drive and scan your system without Windows running. If worse comes to worse how to recover your files and reset the the puter back to factory settings.

It is important to run both ESET and Malwarebytes, what one might miss the other will catch.

First try Malwarebytes in safe mode. Make a bookmark of the link below or make a shortcut to it on your desktop.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/

The link below show how to start Windows in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.

http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2268

When it boots to the desktop then click the the bookmark or shortcut you made. Download and install the free version and do a complete deep scan of your system. If it finds anything and it can not stop and delete it you will need RKIll to kill it.

If Malwarebytes does not find anything then try ESET online scanner to check for a virus. The first link is the online scanner. You need to USE IE while in the safe mode with networking to run it. The second link explains it.

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner-popup/

http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2921

If neither of them does the job then you will need to try more extreme measures. Everything below should be downloaded on a puter not infected and loaded unto a thumb drive. Then disconnect the infected puter from the internet and follow the instruction to try to get rid of it.

Some viruses can be found but not stopped to be deleted. RKill can find and stop the viruses that others can not. Once the viruses has been shut down the security program can then deleted it. The first link below discusses how it works and it is VERY IMPORTANT to read this page. The second link is for the virus removal guides offered by Bleepingcomputer. You will need another puter to download RKill and malwarebytes. You will need both of them on a thumb drive, DVD or a CD. RKill has different filenames because some malware will not allow processes to run unless they have a certain filename. Therefore when attempting to run RKill, if a malware terminates it, try a different filename. READ the instruction carefully on how to use the programs together.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic308364.html

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/

Download links for RKill.

www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill

If that fails then make a bootable thumb drive or CD. To make a bootable thumb drive you will need to find a working puter to download universal usb installer. You need to read the instruction carefully and know a little about Linux to use this. There can be dragons present if you do not understand what your doing. I make no guarantees.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

It will make a bootable thumb drive that you can add a AV to scan your system. I recommend that you try one of these AV to scan your system if you can make a bootable thumb drive. Read the article completely, there can be problems using these if you do not know what you are doing. I make no guarantees.

These can also be booted from a CD if you have burning software. When you boot the puter with one or more of these you can reconnect to the internet to allow them to update the virus data base.

http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd-download

You can also use Bitdefender but it only boots from a CD. Here is a link to the instructions.

http://www.bitdefender.com/support/How-to-create-a-BitDefender-Rescue-CD-627.html

If you can not boot into Windows to make a backup of your files then you use pendrivelinux and then add Linux Mint CD ISO to boot the lappy . If you have a Windows 8 or above then you need to turn off secure boot and select boot from USB before using the thumb drive. The thumb drive boot will also allow you to check out the rest of the puter. It helps to have a thumb drive or a external drive to copy your data and files to.

If it has a CD/DVD you can burn Linux Mint right to a CD and boot with it. Download Cinnamon 32bit.

Once you have recovered what you need you can reload your OS.

Since you did not list the make, model and OS this part is a generic answer. Some or all of it might help you.

Make sure you back up all your files before doing this.

If your resetting a lappy, make sure you have the AC adapter plugged up. You do not want this process interrupted. This should take one or two hours. It is best to check on it to make sure everything is going fine.

It is best not to boot into Windows to start this process.

If you can not boot into Windows then try Advanced boot options. When you press the power button, start tapping the F8 key. You will see the advance boot menu. Select repair your computer. (This option is available only if the tools are installed on your computer's hard disk.) Select your language and then enter your user name and password. Then click on (brand name) factory Image Restore and next. Answer the question and it should start the recovery back to factory settings.

Recovery from the recovery partition

When you press the power button start tapping the F key for your puter and the BIOS menu will open. Select recovery from the menu, answer the question and the recovery should begin. Depending on your puter this will take one to two hours.

Manufacturers BIOS menu F key

HP/Compaq ESC

ASUS Del

Sony F2

Samsung F4

Gateway, eMachines F10

Acer, Dell, Fijitsu, Gigabyte, Toshiba F12

Your BIOS menu should look something like this. Yours might be different. I am posting this to give you an idea of what it looks like.

ESC = BIOS menu

F1 = System Info

F2 = System Diagnostic

F9 = Boot Device options

F10 = BIOS Setup

F11 = System recovery

First, back you docs/photos/music to flash drive/external hard drive. Before you start working on it, ALWAYS BACK YOUR FILES UP.

That said, reboot your PC. You're going to have to get it into safe mode with networking. It was easy to do in windows 7 and earlier. F8 upon bootup. With windows 8 or 10, it's a bit more complicated. Google it.

Once in safe mode with networking, download malwarebytes and run it, Should remove 90% of the junk on your pc.
After that, download the Kaspersky virus removal tool and run that.
If you still have issues, you're gonna need to take it to a good computer store that knows what they are doing. Each virus is different, and starts/run/behaves differently.

5. Recover your files if Windows is corrupt
6. Keeping your PC clean
7. Hide your IP from hackers with the help of firewall from Comodo

there are lots of cleaners on the market - Kaspersky has some good general antivirus/malware scanners and they have some that are for specific culprits. Malwarebytes is a good general scanner but it doesn't catch everything and can take a lot of time. If I were in your shoes, I would pull the drive and replace it with a SSD and load Windows from disk. You will still have the old drive if you ever want to attempt a deep clean but she'll be back up and running.

There's a thing on every computer called System Restore.

Pretty much, it lets you restore your computer to the way it was a certain date back without changing or removing your files/documents. I had a virus on my computer and it solved the problem.

Just go to the home search bar and type in System Restore or for Windows and it should be straightforward from that.

Most viruses ask you to "format." I would suggest either going to a Best Buy or Walmart with the computer, or use a flash drive (USB), and save everything onto it. Hope this helps.

If scanning and cleaning using anti-virus are not working anymore, then maybe it is time to re-format your laptop. Not repair it, but totally re-format. Here is what you need to do.

1. Get a USB (blank if possible), this will become your backup drive. Save your files in it. Do not copy any programs, sometimes the virus merges with it when it got to your computer.

2. Once you have saved and secured your data, removed the flash drive and keep it safe. Proceed to format your laptop. In formatting, it is recommended to delete all partitions and format your hard drive too. You can just recreate it upon installing your OS.

3. Once OS is installed, next is to install your anti-virus. As much as possible do not connect to the internet, you have to install your anti-virus and have it updated once installation is done.

3. If no more problem is detected, you can now connect your backup drive. Scan it first, then copy files to your computer.

Remember, It is always safe to have a backup copy of your important files, make sure that you have a flash drive, disc or drive to store your data.

Viruses can be prevented by taking sensible precautions, including:

1. Keeping your operating system up to date.
2. Using up to date anti-virus software.
3. Not opening an email attachment unless you are expecting it and know the source (many email servers scan emails with anti-virus software on the user's behalf).
4. Not allowing other users to use their own memory stick on your system.
5. Only downloading files from reputable web sites.
6. Avoiding software from unreliable sources.

Anti-virus software can inspect computer files and email attachments for viruses and remove or quarantine any which are found. It is good practice to backup your data regularly. If a virus does damage your data, you can restore the damaged files from backup.

First, identify the virus by name by running your antivirus program. If you don't have an antivirus program or if your program doesn't detect the virus, you might still be able to identify it by looking for clues about how it behaves. Write down the words in any messages it displays or, if you received the virus in email, write down the subject line or name of the file attached to the message. Then search an antivirus vendor's website for references to what you wrote down to try to find the name of the virus and instructions for how to remove it.

Make a scan to make sure those documents are clean of viral payloads, runnable codes within documents are called macros. If they are clean or not copy them to a thumb drive then you can do reformat and cleanup at your leisure.

Linux I find is excellent for recovery for the less stellar Windows for you can install and run them right on USB. And read documents safely.

If you want to be somewhat safe, and you know the virus didn't infect any of the files / folders your pictures / music / etc is in, just get an external hard drive, copy the files you want to keep (refrain from copying programs). Once you have all the files you want on the hard drive, just reinstall the OS. Otherwise virus software usually does the trick.

You shouldn't need to worry.
Any IMPORTANT files will be already backed up, copied, and protected. They will be copied to an external disk and / or Cloud service. So you can re-build and copy them back.
If you have any files that you think are important, then you will have taken the 5 minutes a week required to look after them and protect them. If you haven't bothered, then by definition you have decided that they are not important.
