1.C+O2 →CO2
2.CO2 + C → 2CO
3. 3CO + Fe2O3 → 2Fe + 3CO2
If 12 g of carbon is used in stage 2 and all the carbon monoxide produced is used in stage 3,what mass of CO2 is produced in stage 3?(C=12,O=16)

Molar mass of C = 12 g/mol
Molar mass of CO = 12 + 16 = 28 g/mol
Molar mass of CO₂ = 12 + 16×2 = 44 g/mol

Stage 2 : CO₂ + C → 2CO
1 mole of C produces 2 moles of CO.
No. of moles of C used = 12/12 = 1 mol
No. of moles of CO produced = 1 × 2 = 2 mol

Stage 3 : 3CO + Fe₂O₃ → 2Fe + 3CO₂
1 mole of CO produces 1 mole of CO₂.
No. of moles CO used = 2 mol
No. of moles of CO₂ produced = 2 mol
Mass of CO₂ produced = 44 × 2 = 88 g

if you start with 12g of carbon in stage 2, it yields 12g of carbon in stage 2.
if the same amount is used in stage 2, you start with 12g of carbon (1 mol of carbon) and it mixes with o2 (2 moles) so you end with CO2, which weights 12g (1 mol) + 32g (2 mol oxygen) : 44 g total
