SF6 Question. Just curious?
It is bothering me a bit now!
If sulphur has got 3 p orbitals, and each orbital can hold 2 electrons each meaning there is a total of 6 electrons. Howcome fluorine can bond with sulfur six times to produce 6 bond pair of electrons, which is a total of 12 electrons?? Do the excess electrons move up a shell, or what happens?

The six electrons of the sulfur atom will bond with six electrons from the six fluorine atoms. A bond requires a pair of electrons. The other 6 electrons in the sulfur atom are in the first and second shells of its atom. There are no excess electrons.
