Your period is as good or as bad as you make it.
Unless you have a serious health problem there's little reason for your period to be a 'nightmare', the more you know about menstruation the easier it is as the better you know how to manage it, and unpacking negative messages you've been taught about menstruation will improve your attitude which in turn improves menstruation.
For now use pads - remember there's a huge difference between commercial pads and cloth pads, or pads verses period underwear, so try different types. If you want to move on from pads consider menstrual cups or softcups. Make sure you know how to use the menstrual products you chose to use to reduce risk of leaking or any odor.
Make a note of when your period started and monitor your flow, it will help you predict your next period a little better - it's normal for cycles to be irregular at first, but the more you pay attention to your cycles the better. Also let your mom or guardian know so you get what you need and can ask them any questions you may have, plus menstruation can be a big deal but even if you don't feel like celebrating it's still a good excuse for a treat!
