What happened at the interview that the other candidate was selected for the job over myself?

This was for a part-time position working in a popular woman's retail store. We both interviewed at the same time in the same room with the same assistant manager. I was dressed very well in a brand new dress and happy to be there and gave excellent answers to all of the assistant manager's questions. This other gal mentioned she did not have weekend availability, but I did and let the AM know I was more than willing to work weekends. I've often heard that employer's tend to frown upon multiple tattoos and facial piercings when it comes to working in the public, and this other gal interviewing for the same position was covered in tats and piercings. I do not. Some of her answers included overly-personal details of previous "work scenarios" including being asked out on the job - why she said that, and how it was related to the job, I have no idea. Today, I went into the store and saw that she was working there, meaning she was picked over me. At the interview it seemed like I had the upper hand. I was professional and upbeat. It went very well for me.

I am sure she's a great gal and I'm happy for her, but what do you think happened that I wasn't selected for the job?

Employers should NEVER interview candidates at the same time, in the same room. They must always be individual, separate interviews. Sounds like the employer already had the selection made (related to the employer) before you even filled out an application (based upon the info you stated).

Sometimes when you say all the right things, it can come off as sounding like you are just saying what you think they want to hear. Your answers may have seemed fake or rehearsed while the other person's answers may have seemed real and sincere.

But, as Judy said, we weren't there, so it is only a guess.

Nobody herre can say, since we weren't there.

It may have just been her resume, she may have had more working experience in this type of job or in general. She may have had attached letters of recommendations and a great cover letter along with her resume and having tats and piercings are obviously not an issue with this employer, she was the one chosen because a decision had to be made, nothing against you though, you don't know what her resume said that may have very well been the deciding factor here.
