Is it possible to fit a wide range of tyre widths onto one mountain bike?

Yes. To be sure what your exact bike will accept or won't accept - check with a mechanic or a salesperson at a bicycle shop. What an amazing idea.

Tire width on any bike is mostly determined by how much clearance there is between the tires and the frame. If your tires are very close to the frame anyplace, you can't use a larger one. As for smaller narrower tires, you can probably go as small as you want to

You can usually mount anything from 1.5" to 2.2"

I have found that there are differences in tire width of the same size when put on the same bike at the same pressure

So 2.2 is not always 2.2

No question you can do this. It is often the rear tire that will be the bigger issue as it is more cramped back there takes more weight overall . This is not the case with all bikes some are designed for a wider range in the rear

Many go with a smaller in the rear and bigger in the front and even mix and match brands.

I run either a 2.1 or 2.2 rear and a 2.2 or 2.3 in front depending on the tire

I have a XC/Trail style bike

There are 2 factors. Clearance of the frame. Inner width of the rim. Most bikes will handle 1.5-2.3 with no problem.. Some manufacturers are going a bit wider rim (25mm) which might change things. I believe right now, most have a default of 17mm-21mm.

Depends on what you think of as a "wide range", what rims you have, and what sort of handling you can accept.
The bikes I've had so far have been able to take 2.2" wide tires, but not 2.3" reliably. The 2.3" tend to chafe at the chainstay unless pumped very hard, which kinda defeats the purpose of wide tires.
The rims I've used have worked OK even with 1" slicks and 2.2" knobblies. Giving my bikes a functional range of 1.2".
If I wanted to run really low pressures, I'd need wider rims, as wide tires on narrow rims gets floppy on low pressures.
Newer rims are often wider - there are even the crazy-wide Fatbike rims - and may not be a happy combination with a really narrow (slick) tire.

most frames can fit a very large variety of different tire widths
