一般進美式餐廳時，第一個面對的是帶位子的人，男的一般叫Captain，女的一般叫Hostess。 通常的場景是相互交換問候之後，他們會問你準備多少人來吃飯，Captain/Hostess會很有禮貌的詢問，“May I ask, Sir, how many members are in your party (or group)?" 一般廉價及中餐館則只會問，"How many?"
等坐定後，比較有訓練的餐館會說，''Our services staff will be right here and take care of you. In the mean time, may I get you anything?" 比較差的才會直接說，"Our waiter will take your order soon.(好像暗示客人，假如你不點餐，你就不要進來。)" 每天菜色的更換，可以對客人說，"Our menu will be renewed each(or every) day. Do you care to hear(or know) today's special, Sir?"
