Best way to prepare for a road trip?

My friend and I are going to go on a 10 hour road trip to the grand canyon. We plan on leaving Thursday and being home by Sunday. What's the best way to plan a trip like this? What should we be prepared for? And what extra things do we need to pack?

Check the weather forecast and road reports so you bring appropriate clothing and things like an ice scraper if it looks like you might need it, check your oil, wiper fluid, and coolant, fill up on gas. Get a paper map. They don't need reception to work.
