I'm going to buy a computer that has intel i3 5th generation and my friend has a computer that is intel i3 4th generation and his laptop works very great and i'm wondering if mine will work better or worse than his as far as speed to the computer. Please answer if you know the answer, Thank You.

Well usually each new generation has some slight performance increases and are more power efficient with maybe some new features. But when a die shrink happens, it will usually be a larger performance increase and larger power decrease.

intel cpus have been following the "tick-tock" formula. tick = die shrink, tock = improve the architecture. most recently however they have been doing tick-tock-tock.

the 3rd generation was a tick, the 4th generation was a tock and the 5th generation was a tock. 6th generation was a tick.

so performance difference between 4th and 5th generation were very very small. but the biggest differences were better power efficiency aswell as a huge improvement in integrated graphics.

so id say the clock speed would be the most determining factor comparing a 4th gen i3 to a 5th gen i3. if the 4th gen is 3.6ghz and the 5th gen was 3.4ghz, the 4th gen would win.

hello, if i were you i would get i7 :)

For the last little while Intel has not really been increasing the performance appreciably from it previous generations. It's been adding somewhat dubious new instruction set extensions which may or may not ever get used, and it's been subtly reducing the amount of power the processors use, but that's about it. So if you get a good deal on a 4th gen i3, then go for it over the 5th or 6th generations, as there would be no appreciable performance differences. But only go for it if it's much cheaper, don't bother if there is little price difference.

Filenotfound got a pretty spot on answer.

Just to help you compare further, look up benchmark scores. Websites like CPU World measure the speed of CPUs and give them scores, so you can look up exact CPUs and see their differences. For example:
The i3 6320 (skylake) vs i3 4370 (haswell):
http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/414/Intel_Core_i3_i3-4370_vs_Intel_Core_i3_i3-6320.html

The Skylake i3 got a 7% faster single-core speed and a 28% faster multi-core speed.

as a general rule newer generations of cpus are 10-15% better than the older generation...
aka
gen 5 i3 will be about 10% better than the same level (lowest end i3 gen 4 vs lowest end i4 gen 5) of the previous generation

why would you think newer cpu would be slower
