Ideal Lens for Taking Full Bodied Animal Photographs?

Hey,

What lens would be ideal for taking up close, full bodied photos of animals?

I have a Canon EOS 5D Mark III that I bought used.

I went to South Africa with my previous camera and had trouble getting the bigger animals' bodies in the shot when we got quite close to them. I need a decent lens that will allow me to capture the entire animal at fairly close distance.

Any suggestions for long range lenses that would help me get shots of the smaller animals, like mongooses, from a distance would be helpful as well.

I'll be interested priced up to 2000 GBP for each individual lens.

Thanks.

Without knowing what you were using before and missing a sample image showing the issue, it's impossible to say what you need.
What focal length were you using for the shots where you couldn't get the whole body in the frame? This data is encoded in your image. You can use Opanda to read the EXIF data.
For elephants, I was using 150mm (full frame equivalent focal length) for full body shots, 300 mm for close ups of the face at various distances.
I found that I was shooting from 17mm to 300mm and wishing I had 600mm for birds and distant shots of various critters.
Lenses that come to mind are the
Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6
Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 (either the expensive one or cheap one)
Canon 24-70mm, either f/2.8 or f/4

If you have space, a decent tripod is helpful for bird shots.

My first choice would be based on how close I could get to the animals, and the size of the animals too. I mean photographing a leopard is much different than a bird. If I can get within 10-20', then I would go with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. If couldn't get that close, then either the 70-200 f/2.8L with a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter, or a 400 f/4L or 400 f/5.6L or a zoom with a comparable focal length such as the 100-400mm. It all depends upon how much weight I'm willing to carry and, of course, on my budget.
