You can probably use it without permission, but it's easy enough to ASK for permission, right? Giving credit is not the same thing as having a copyright license. Also, as suggested by Kalico, if anyone wants to take legal action against your use, you have the defense of "fair use". Not all "educational and instructional purposes" are exempt, so you have the burden of proving that your use meets the test.
The good news is that there is a specific statute for use of copyrighted materials in a non-profit classroom. The bad news is that your newspaper may also circulate outside of the school. Your journalism teachers should be able to give you the necessary guidance.
