Just about anyone can bust 40 mph --- DOWNHILL. When you get to be old (like me) with arthritis & can top 30 mph on a flat terrain, come back & let us know.
It's not how fast you can go down the hill. It's how fast you pedal back up the hill. That's what separates the men from the boys.
Rather than insult you like others have done, I'll give you an actual answer. I went 37 down a mountain pass when riding from Alaska to Seattle. I was wondering why the cars were slowing down. Then I looked at my bike computer and about crashed when I realized they weren't slowing down, I was speeding up!
Downhill speed doesn't concern me. Gravity can help make anyone appear to be fast. I've watched pros on TV in the Tour of California approach 35 mph on flats.
Downhill speed is almost meaningless unless you're a downhill mountain biker. How fast can you get back up the hill?
Fastest I have ever gone downhill was 90 kph(about 56 mph). On the flat I once reached 70 kph in a group sprint. To be fair we had a tailwind
Going fast down hill especially in the mountains isn't very hard; 50+ is very attainable

Approx 37 mph on a dual carriageway, and yes it was downhill.
50.6 mph. I did it on a mountain bike with skinny tires, while going down a steep mountain road in my highest gear, spinning as fast as I was able to.
Flat ground when touring around 25-28. Downhill run at least 30. I make a point of not going to fast, my body can't take another wipeout/accident
I ve been clocked at 39 mph going through a 200-foot timing gate, typically do 34-37 mph sign sprints at the end of club rides, and 52 mph downhill. (Downhills in Michigan aren t very long.)
Topped out at 35 on mine with the street tires on it
the fastest i've gone was 95kph on the descent of the Stelvio, i wouldn't do it again actually. Imagine what could happen when you get a flat front tire
40? HA, thats nothin! You aint go down faster than i did on your mother.
