If your loans are federal student loans, forgiveness programs are usually connected to various types of public service, such as working as a teacher in high needs areas, working for a public service organization, volunteering for AmeriCorps or Vista, or serving in the military. You may also receive forgiveness for part of your loan if you are are using certain income based repayment plans and you have a balance at the end of your loan term (usually 20-25 years). However, there are some strings attached to this, so most students don't actually have much, or any, balance left to be forgiven. There are also circumstances under which your loans may be discharged, such as total and permanent disability, the closure of a school before you completed your program, or fraud on the part of your school. You can find information about all of this at
www.studentloans.gov. If your loans are private student loans from a bank or other commercial lender, then you can sometimes negotiate a lower payment, but there is rarely any type of loan forgiveness program available other than bankruptcy.
