Hi, I'm doing GCSE English and I have a creative writing task, I have to write a short story about 2 pages long. I have the title for my story "Brave men" I picked this title from the poem "Do not go gentle into that good night" as the poem is about a brave man. ( I think )

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to start this story off as Its a mega mark I need and I'm struggling. For my theme for "Brave men" I was going to plan my story around World War ( Any ) So if anyone can help me you would be very much appreciated thank you.

OK, well, first, I don't think it's a great idea to start with a theme. But, that's said and done, and you have a theme kicking around in your mind. Don't marry it -- be open to changing it and the title. But anyway, you have a starting point.

What you need is a character with a rather simple problem that people are going to care about. It could even be a problem you are struggling with now. Character A desires something; Character B is blocking it, probably because of what Character B desires. The short story is about how they solve that.

So, maybe a soldier gets a Dear John letter, and has to figure out how to respond and live his life without his girlfriend's long-distance support. Or maybe there's a consignment of steaks that are going through the soldier's territory, and someone wants to steal them. Or maybe some soldiers find a cache of very fine French wine and drink it leading to . . . your short story.

As you can see, bravery doesn't interest me very much as a theme. But if you can find a small way for your soldier to be brave (maybe he rescues a cat from some German soldiers who are marching through), it could be much more interesting than being mindlessly brave for a "greater cause" that's going to get the soldier killed.

I always thought that poem was more about bravery against illness and death. David Bowie's death sprung to mind. His last music videos (particularly Lazarus) show he did not go gentle into that good night. He used his art to explore his problems right up to the end. Such genius.

on the first day of the battle of the Somme the British climbed out of their trench and tried to reach the German lines they were accosted by a hail of machine gun fire 60,000 were left wounded or dead a disaster they were ordered to do it again a day or two later and they did there were brave men sorry there were no good nights in war
