It probably doesn't, but it's important for socializing children that they grow up with the opposite sex.

I believe that a general lack of familiarity, and thus acceptance, with the other kind of monkey is responsible for a surprisingly-large minority of our social ills, and exacerbates all the rest.
I just don't see any rationale as to how gender segregation of ANY kind, and especially at young ages, can do anything except make things worse.

In some age groups, it may be better to educate sexes separately and merge the classes later ages.
