Am I the only person of David Bowie's generation (I am 69) who has never liked his whole flashy persona? Frankly, he gave me the creeps. I am annoyed that the BBC devoted half of its 6pm TV news programme to him (but only 3 minutes to people dying of starvation in Syria), especially as it was going to broadcast a special feature programme on him an hour later, and there were other channels broadcasting similar tribute programmes. Bob Geldorf and similar people have done much more for the world.

I actually worked part-time as a DJ in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To the best of my recollection we had no Bowie records in our collection, and I certainly did not get any requests for his music.

I've already answered a couple of similar questions but since his death has affected me almost on the same level as John Lennon's, I feel compelled to answer again.

David Bowie was an original and although I was not a huge fan of his growing up, I gained a greater appreciation for the man and his music as I grew older.

Whenever an artist of his caliber passes, I feel a great sadness and a sense of loss. One always expects the great ones to be immortal, so it always hits hard when they go.

I will personally miss David Bowie. I have been thinking about him since I woke up to the news of his passing yesterday. His songs keep playing over and over in my head. And more than once I've choked up a bit.

Major Tom has left us and is traveling through the Cosmos now. Hopefully he's with John, George and Freddy and all the others who went before.

RIP David Bowie. You were a great man and a great artist. You are even greater now because now you're part of everything.

Shocked! I grew up listening to Bowie's music, and his androgynous-ness. My favorite video is Dancing in the Streets with him and Jagger. Too good! Rest in Peace David. My condolences Iman.

The passing of David Bowie RIP is a sad end to a great era in English culture. But new 'heroes' will arrive, as they always do, it just takes time.

I still really like "Golden Years" and "Fame", but haven't ever been exposed to any of his other work--maybe I'll check some of it out on YouTube and/or meet a friend who is really into him and get turned on to his other music that way...

One thing that struck me about David Bowie was that, in a written interview, he was quoted as saying that he much preferred the creativity of the studio--of creating music--as opposed to touring / playing his music live on stage over and over again--that really gained respect for him in my eyes, because the creative act is what I cherish about writing, and I imagine that he felt that performing live on stage could become a rather mechanical task after playing the same song(s) repeatedly...

Bowie’s passing was announced in a statement on his official website that read: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.” The news was confirmed on Twitter by Bowie’s son, director Duncan Jones, who just finished the movie Warcraft.

It is not a sad terrible thing that David died because we must all live until we die ! Sad thing for David Bowie will be if He was holding hands with the Devil when He died or holding Hands With His Angel from Heaven .When we are young and free we will hold the Devil in one hand and our Angel in the other .And if we live to be old the one that we are holding close will be the one we must go with ! If it was not so I would not tell you it was . Rev J Vernon Wood Orange County FL

A lot of people during this time don't know who he was. Very tragic that they don't. He was a very great musician who defined most of the progressive rock music in the 70s. I may be young, but his music has inspired me. R.I.P. David Bowie.
