Yes, Jews had been exempted from serving other gods because they were notorious for serving only one God. As Christians continued to talk of Jesus, the government asserted that Jews were no longer monotheist and should therefore worship Roman gods also. To dispel this notion, John attempted to convince the government that Jesus and God were one and the same. Unfortunately, JOHN HAS DECEIVED THE CHRISTIANS also. John live over 100 years and wrote his Gospel around 101A.D. under the scrutiny of the Romans.

I am a Christian but here are my thoughts on why some prefer Jesus and the Father to be one being:

People are desperate to believe in God but have insufficient faith to trust in his words and follow the course that would lead them to know that there is a God. Their fear leads them to create imaginary, fantasy like characters to believe In. These characters cannot be proven or disproven. Thus, the believer is safe. If their belief was proven incorrect, it would be devastating to the believers life paradigm.

The fact that God is a real person who has values and characteristics like man, though in perfection, is way too close to home. It means that the believer must confront an uncertain reality which is that God may exist. If this is so, then God may also not exist. It is necessary that the believer not incorporate this uncertainty. It is best to ensure that we turn a blind eye. It is better to live in uncertainty than to seek out a real God with the chance that one will not be found. There is no chance of this with an imaginary, unrealistic God. The fact is that if the believer looked deep inside, he may find that he really does not believe at all.

This is why many can only accept the concept of a dead prophet. If we accept a person as a prophet and he prophesies something, then in order to accept it, we must personally confront the question of whether or not he is really a prophet. These kinds of questions must remain in the dark in order to protect ourselves.

Only those with the courage to seek God will find him. Most prefer to seek for signs and follow the words of others whom they choose to trust.

No. The two Mormons at my door are also one in their purpose. They have no idea what they're in for.

They ARE one. If they weren't Christianity would be polytheistic. But, it isn't.

You'd have to ask Jesus that.
According to written record, he is the first person to say that. (Well, to be specific: something tantamount to that. According to the gospels, what Jesus said was that the Father is God, and that he and the Father were one.)

Noope.

Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” (John 20:28-29)

MARANATHA! Come, Lord Jesus, COME!

I doubt they would care or know what polytheistic was.
Jesus said before Abraham was, I AM.
It is a reference to God being eternal and Jesus being apart of God.
Jesus said he only did what he saw the Father doing. He told the disciples to pray Our Father.. who art in Heaven...
This sounds as if he wanted them to defer to a Father and not several gods . The Holy Spirit was mentioned through the Old Testament so even though they were clearly monotheistic, they acknowledged God as spirit.

Was polytheism even an issue when that doctrine was declared? Does it even matter? Like, really, whatever category you put my religion into does nothing to change my beliefs. You can (and do) describe it however you like. Makes no difference to me.

Doubt it.
