Question about my SSI?

2015-12-23 2:23 am
I get almost 500$ a month for being schizophrenic and I just turned 18 and want to move in this apartment that rent is 350$ and so is the deposit so 700$ all together to move in. in order to be able to move in they need to raise my SSI so I can afford it which they will do once I have to pay bills but is there a way they can raise my SSI if I get a landlord statement? If not I cannot move in..
My mom says no because it's too late I have to wait till next month and also who can I talk to about this?

The maximum SSI benefit is $733 a month; it is reduced by any other income you receive. SSI isn't raised because you need it. It is raised only if you are already paying your fair share of household expenses. So if you want the maximum SSI benefit you need to be paying rent where you currently live and it must be high enough to warrant the higher SSI benefit amount. One way is to pay fair share which is determined by adding the monthly rent or mortgage payment, utilities and money spent on food and then dividing by the # of people who live in the household. IF you do that than you will be placed in a higher living arrangement situation and will be paid the higher amount.

At $733 a month you could afford to pay no more than $250 a month toward rent - which obviously means that you could only rent a room somewhere or you would need enough roommates so that your share of the rent wouldn't be greater than $250 a month.

Any changes in payment amounts is made by a claims rep in the social security office which services your address.

If you are living with your mom, you should be able to save money for future rent payments from your job money. Most people who are working know that you shouldn't budget more than 30% of your earnings for housing. If this won't pay the rent, you find a roommate to share the costs.
