"16 want to take spanish"
Put that number on one of the circles.

"11 want to take latin"
Put that number on the other circle.

"5 want to take both"
Put that number in the intersection. So of the 16 who want to take spanish, 16 - 5 want to take ONLY spanish. And you can also figure the number who want to take ONLY latin.
Now you know how many are in each separate piece of the two circles + intersection. And so you know how many are on the outside of the circles (it's whatever is left from the 30).

13. # inside the circles divided by 30.
