family is a collective noun showing group of parents and children=my family were watching TV .Plural verb after family=members of my family.
did=past tense do=used with the main verb referring "was watching"=to emphasize the positive or negative nature of a sentence=declarative.did what is ambiguous, while were is better.

不可以用did（只有在原動詞為過去簡單式的do類動詞，且無使用其它助動詞時，才會使用助動詞did來做省略，代替原動詞），因為這是為避免用詞重複，而將在對等的第二個子句的動詞過去進行式were watching省略成were；即將主要動詞省略，只保留助動詞were。
