Sliding ON the snow if you are on top of the surface. Sliding IN the snow or THROUGH the snow if you are penetrating it, burrowing into it.

Either way, it leads often to injuries.

Playing in (or with) the snow. Sliding (or sledding) on the snow. Tunneling in (or under) the snow.

If you are on top of the snow (like snowshoes) you are ON the snow. If you are in or under the snow (like your truck got stuck in a snowbank) you are IN the snow.
