This is an exercise in dividing a fraction.

(1/2) divided by 4

Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its "reciprocal" (the fraction with that number on the bottom).
The reciprocal of 4 is (1/4)

Thus, the division can be changed to a multiplication:

(1/2) * (1/4)

To multiply fractions is easy:

(top * top) / (bottom * bottom)

(1/2) * (1/4) = (1*1) / (2*4) = (1/8)

Each person gets an eight of a gallon (which is a pint = 1/2 a quart)
