Historically, there may be some truth in your definition of liberal, but in terms of contemporary reality, it's the complete opposite of the truth.
Because "liberals" grabbed education and media and set up terminology.
Sort of- Liberals are as far left as America goes-
We have no left.
There is only a far right wing media clown-
no leftist equivalent. No leftist media!
There is "classical liberalism" which is generally the opposite from "modern liberalism". Many people confuse the difference, and many modern libs mistakenly believe they are classic liberals while they support policies that are the opposite.
It's actually logical to use the term "Liberal" when referring to both Classical and new Social variants.
Classical liberalism says — among other things — that the individual must be free from societally constructed constraint, like a caste system or the British version of social classes - nobility vs. mercantile, etc. Unregulated capitalism means that everyone EVERYONE has the right to enter the market in whatever way they choose.
As it evolved, it became clear that there were other dunderheaded social constructions that prevented individuals from truly entering the market, from truly expressing their freedom in this and other ways: things like racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, gender bias, homophobia, and other irrational hatreds. This liberalism sought to ensure the freedom of those individuals to enter the market in a manner of their choosing by trying to prevent the irrational constraints placed on them by the bigoted dunderheads.
If you look at it from the dunderheaded point of view, you might be tempted to say that the dunderheads no longer have the freedom to constrain the behavior of others. They should be justifiably upset that their oppression tactics are no longer allowed by law. And so they claim that their rights to oppress others are being violated, so how could liberalism be truly trying to make people free when the government is cracking down on them?
Poor dunderheads.
