Is it more expensive to send a murderer to prison for life, or to perform a lethal injection?

Some say the numerous appeals from a death sentence can be more expensive than a life sentence. However, to house an inmate is $40,000-$50,000 a year. If the person spends 40+ years in prison, you're looking at $2,000,000. Does the legal/appeals process from lethal injection really cost more than $2,000,000?

Depends on how many tax payer funded appeals there are

Capital punishment is more expensive, because it requires years of appeals and other resource-draining court procedures before the sentence can be carried out. This is necessary since there can be no restitution in case of error, so the speed cannot be increased.

But even if that were not the case... what's more important - what is right, or what is cheaper?

the former is much more expensive.

The latter.

I believe you should be able to support the system off of the labor of the prisoners.

Since, in most states the death penalty involves numerous appeals which are ultimately paid for by the tax payer it is cheaper to impose a life sentence. These appeals of a death sentence can last for decades

Because of the automatic appeal when a death sentence is given, it is cheaper to warehouse a prisoner for life than pay the additional legal expenses.

Given all the appeals for people on death row, life cost less

Lethal injection is more expensive and it is too easy.. Let them rot in prison for the rest of their lives without a chance of parole.

Either way, the legal appeals are endless. The cost ends up being about the same.

I would think that the first one is more expensive. The prisoner has shelter, clothing, food and medical attention for life, and while medication is costly, I don't think the injection itself it as expensive as housing the prisoner.

Its said that life in prison if the far greater punishment, but don't we all live in our individual prisons.

Both are very expensive and profitable for prison contractors. $40,000 a year per prisoner or $500,000 for injection.

really? you're trying to find the cheapest way to get rid of a human being?
