Aluminium is extracted from aluminium oxide by electrolysis. The equation for the reaction is:
2(Al2O3) -> 4Al + 3O2

[Ar: O = 16: Al = 27; molar volume of gases= 24000 cm^3 at r.t.p]

(a) Calculate the volume of oxygen (measured at r.t.p) produced from 1 mole of aluminium oxide

(b) Calculate the mass of aluminium oxide required to produce 5.4g of aluminium

(a)
(1 mol Al2O3) x (3 mol O2 / 2 mol Al2O3) x (24000 cm^3/mol) = 36000 cm^3 O2

(b)
(5.4 g Al) / (27 g Al/mol) x (2 mol Al2O3 / 4 mol Al) x (102 g Al23O3/mol) = 10.2 = 10 g Al2O3
