In order to play Persona 5, do I have to play Persona 1-4 to understand it?

I ve been thinking of pre-ordering this game as of late, but I haven t checked and seen if it was chronological, or if I could just jump in.

They are not connected, no.You can start anywhere. I'd buy Persona 4 though at least so you can get a feel for how the game works
