What is an ionic compounds "constituent ions"? Also what does dissolution mean?

For example, salt is NaCl and it's constituent ions are Na+ and Cl-. Dissolution means that, in solution, the ion separate so you get Na+(aq) and Cl-(aq).

I should note that is possible to dissolve some non-ionic compounds (covalent compounds) without having ions to separate. Like sugar in water.
