先講清楚，現時仍未有確實證據發現有重力波。光波即是電磁波，我們見到的光只是整個電磁波頻譜中一小部份，大部份電磁波我們無法用肉眼看見。電磁波是空間中電場及磁場的連續規律變化。

但令理解電磁波現象有難度的是波粒二象性。以前大家都認為電磁波是純粹的波動，但愛恩斯坦的光電效應理論(這個理論令他得到諾貝爾獎)證實電磁波有粒子的性質，這種粒子被稱為光子。光子是確實可測的粒子，但光子在空間傳播時又有波的特性。

重力波的概念與電磁波差不多。重力波就是理論上重力場的連續規律變化。因為物理學界普遍認為若重力波真的存在，它應該與電磁波一樣有波粒二象性，所以科學界普遍相信有重力子存在。但探測重力波極為困難，因為它的幅度太少，即使宇宙大爆炸這個宇宙史上最大的事件，它產生的重力波也是極為微弱，現時人類的技術未能肯定確實它的存在。現在各先進國家均繼續探測重力波，但將來可能有以太空為基地的超大重力波探測器，可以讓我們更確切地找到重力波。
