they both have benefits and drawbacks. the ps4 has better power for graphics and fps on most games, the xbox one has more function then just gaming like tv capabilities, and apps like netflix.
take a look at a list of exclusive games on each system, you can find them on wikipedia, and determine which system you want to play more based on that. do you want to play halo? get an xbox one. do you want to play uncharted? get a ps4. games like assassin's creed, madden nfl, call of duty, battlefield, etc, will be on both systems anyway.
look at what systems your friends play on most. if you want to play with them and team up, get that system.
you can get one now during the holiday season when they're on sale or with good bundles, and get the other later.
i have an xbox one because i love halo. i had the original xbox when that came out in early 2000s and all my friends had it and still play it. that's why i got an xbox one. but, they're both great systems.
keep in mind, if you have xbox 360, xbox one announced backwards compatibility this month. a select 100 games are available if you have them, the official list is on xbox.com and they will add more in the future as developers and publishers allow them too. they also have games with gold for members. and now with BC released, any game that the 360 game is released will work with xbox one, plus whatever games they release for xbox one, so you get more that way.
play station has their play station now, which is a subscription service you have to pay for to play current and old games on demand. games with gold for xbox one and bc is free if you own the games. for Sony you have to pay for PSN / play station plus for the games service.
