Can I stack metal shelving units if I secure them?

If I take the normal metal shelving units and combine them so they are say 8-10 shelves instead of 4-5 and put lighter weight objects on top, and secure them to the wall in a place or two; should I be ok? ANyone with experience doing this?

Regardless of how strong the shelving is, I would be very careful
about stacking them too high. Even a smaller object, like a small
book for instance, will come down with a lot of force if it falls from
8 feet up. How are you ever going to reach the higher shelves?
If you have two four foot shelves stacked one on top of the other,
that combination is going to be very unstable simply because
they are meant to sit side by side not on top of each other. If you
do decide to try that make sure that your anchors for them are into
the studs not just into the drywall.

What is "a normal metal shelving unit"? Some kinds might be suitable, some not. And are you doing this at home or in a workplace setting?
