WiFi radio waves (2.4 and 5.0 GHz frequency) propagates though things in very fine patterns. anything can alter how strong signal is at a specific spot. take a look at these pictures and see just how many peaks of high signal strength there can be in a room.

each one of those bright spots is an area of higher signal strength.
walls, electronics, large metal objects and even people can affect signal strength. if you are having poor reception at your computer, try moving it around to a different location (can be a small movement) to see if you get an area of better reception. if you want to buy something, try looking for a better wireless adapter for it.
on most laptops, the network card is a changeable module. on desktops this is even easier to do.
