You could always start with Sam Harris' comment that "sport" can cover a wide range of activities, from lawn bowling to UFC cage fighting. In the same way, religion can go all the way from Jainism, where people cover their mouths to keep from killing bugs by accidentally swallowing them, to Christian and Muslim terrorism.
You could also point out that religion (or more precisely, monotheism) tends to be divisive, encouraging people to choose sides, to badmouth each other for nothing more than being on the other team. That's a lot like sports.
You could point out that sports serve as much meaningful purpose as religion does. With one exception, of course: sports are entertaining.
