A day, a week, a year, 20 years...

If she just found out she has it, she has not yet had any treatment. The real issue will be how the cancer responds to treatment.

Stage 4 means that the cancer has spread to the surrounding tissues. Which could be extensive or limited.

In cancer of the liver, there is a new technique where they cut off the blood supply to the affected area and give the patient growth hormones to try to make the unaffected liver area grow. This is risky because the hormones can make the migrated cells not in the live grow as well.

The purpose of this procedure is to give the patient enough of a liver to survive the upcoming chemotherapy treatments without needing a liver transplant. However, it all depends on the spread of the cancer within the liver AND the cancer's migration to the surrounding tissues.

If the metastasis of the cancer is minor and the liver is only half-way cancerous, the patient has a good chance of surviving to a full life after the treatment and chemotherapy.

It all depends on the nature of each individual's circumstances.

Stage 4 means it's inoperable and perhaps terminal. There's still hope though! If I were her I'd look at all my options, not just chemo or radiation. I'd go to a naturopath doctor as well as researching more natural ways of healing.

Weeks or months. My friend was diagnosed 3 months ago and she is still OK.
