What would happen if all the men at work were forced to give their job to any woman who could do it better? THAT would be good for productivity.
How do you define who 'needs to work'?
Why should a woman not be the main or equal bread-winner in a family?
What if a person chooses to work to make money to give them more choices in life? Isn't that their right in a free society?
The way I see it, employers want whoever can do the job well at an economic rate. In some countries without a philosophy of social responsibility, that can mean wages get driven down.
Restricting the size of the available workforce would tend to increase wages but would reduce profitability and/or raise prices. There is a balance to be struck that can only be influenced by government enacting the will of the people.
If you favour survival of the fittest, then you have to accept that some people will get chewed up and spat out and left to rot ... and it could be you or someone you care about.
