You're right that it wasn't a star. Stars don't shoot through the sky like that (the name "shooting star" is a misnomer for a meteor, which is actually a tiny pebble).
Comets have tails, but they don't move perceptably. So anything you saw streaking across the sky certainly wasn't a comet.
It sounds like a meteor. It's not unheard of for a meteor to change direction; what's actually happening is that pieces of it are breaking off and flying in different directions. Sometimes when that happens, only one of the remaining fragments is still glowing, so it looks like the whole thing altered its course.
