Shear Stupidity = Sheer Stupidity?

shear=verb, to cut;
Sheer =adv.,complete and not mixed with anything else;
eg:-I only agreed out of sheer desperation, sheer stupidity.
eg:- Her mind sheered away from men she did not wish to talk to;out of sheer stupidity ! Hence sheer stupidity.
