No! There is nothing wrong with that! I'm 13 and I listen to older music too. The Beatles, The Who, Electric Light Orchestra, and Ray Peterson are just a few of the artists I listen too. People tell me all the time how weird I am just because I don't listen to Ariana Grande or that stupid whip/nae nae song. Today's mainstream music is utter crap these days. There are a few decent artists that are mainstream that aren't terrible: Imagine Dragons, Fun., X Ambassadors, Coldplay, etc. But their slowly fading out. My point is, don't worry about what other people think. It's nice knowing there are other people my age that don't think listening to a song thats older is crazy. You know that I'm the only black person at my school that loves rock and metal and hates rap and hip-hop. People automatically stereotype that all black people LOVE rap and hip-hop, when in reality I hate them. People stereotype that all teenagers listen to current mainstream music, but that's not true either.

Nope, my youngest Son does also. It may not be entirely common, but it is certainly NOT WEIRD, it just means you found the good stuff making you just that little bit smarter than the others that didn't [welcome to the evolutionary ladder, it's your way out of the machine]!
Try some Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Beatles, Cream, Bread, Eagles, CCR [Creedence Clearwater Revival], Queen, Simon and Garfunkel, and countless more, the list is seemingly endless. I always loved the protest music as it had a lot to say about what was wrong and funny enough is still mostly relevant like John McCutcheon, he has been around for a long long time but even has some very recent music. And if you wanna try something just a little bit wild check out Kenny Rogers' first band 'The First Edition', those psychedelic 60's and 70's had some of the coolest sounds that you just don't hear otherwise, like Jefferson Airplane [check out 'white rabbit'] or The Doors.
There is so much astounding music out there that most will never hear because they make gross assumptions about it [like 'newer is better' or 'old is stupid/worse' which is a non sequitur {has no real connection}].
Experience all those sounds and lyrics that you would otherwise never hear.

No. It's not weird. Most teens have not heard most of the music of the 60's and 70's. They've heard a few thing but in general, not much. You have come to realise that there is a great wealth of great music from those times. I only ' discovered ' the Beatles in 1981 after Lennon died and went through a Beatles and Hendrix phase in the 80's when I listened to almost nothing but those. I now listen to a lot more but the Beatles are still one of my favorites.
I also love the Small Faces, the Pretty Things, (early) Pink Floyd, U2, the Seekers and a lot more.

If I have one piece of advice (for anyone who likes folk) it would be to listen to a few tracks by the Seekers. You will hear a singer who was probably the best female vocalist in the WORLD. Great music is often an emotional experience and The Seekers are/were certainly that.

Not ALL modern music is trash. There are a few gems. I would say that 'Bad Romance' is in all honesty one of the greatest pop songs ever written. But I would say the majority of it IS. Rap is a form of poetry (poetry to just a beat) but I would not strictly call it 'music'. 'Music' has some degree of melody and chord structure. The people who keep trying to advise you to listen to modern garbage are themselves brainwashed by the unfortunate culture that we live in.

It's probably because music back in the day was much more meaningful than music today. There was real musicians playing real instruments, not none of these machines that imitate real instruments. Real singers who could actually sing, not someone with an image and an auto-tuned voice. Lyrics that were deep and made sense, not overly graphic or vulgar and just plain silly. It seems today that all you need is a you tube channel and enough followers and you too can be a star, no real talent required.

Not at all . "Good" music is subjective. But, the tastes you prefer as previously said are the roots of rock and roll music. It's like being a DOS baby in a Windows world. If your Windows go down, you have to know how to run DOS to make the computer work. (just an example) You seem to prefer music when notes were more distinct. The guitarist would "hang a note". Solos in a bridge that aren't trampled on by a mish mash of jumbled and indistinct music. I personally just believe you have better taste, and are too intelligent to be taken in by the mess some call music today....(LOL) Not that the older music was simpler by any means. Most preference in music seems to go back to a basic of primal beat. You hear something in there that you can relate to personally. IMHO

Absolutely not! I have grown up loving old music, and I'm only currently in my early 20s, I still prefer to listen to music between the 40s and the 50s, as well as ancient baroque, orchestrals and classical/romantic music. I am not considered weird at all by anyone, only weird people say that others are weird for liking an older generation of music.

Another thing to mention is that current music would be nothing if it were not for older music, many popular genres arose from the inspiration of older genres.

Virtually every modern song you hear today has its roots in the blues. The blues is where it all started. You're not weird for loving old music, you're just music savvy and probably have an excellent ear.

It doesn't matter your 16 now listening to a recording that can be made any time making it as excitant to life. like all the rest of documentations that are made also it a type of studying to listening to old music just remind what has been done to look on it fine for all people liking old music. No, not at all. We all find our tastes and my oldest daughter is in her early 20s. She likes the music of the Big Band Era (1940s, WWII, etc). That would have been the music of my parent's era. Yet, I like the blues music of the early 20th century, but when I was younger, I thought it all "old stuff". Interesting how your tastes ripen. You might also like the folk music of the 1960s and 1970s (Bob Dylan, Kingston Trio, Gordon Lightfoot, Pete Seeger, etc). It is a window into a time and set of circumstances many today do not really appreciate. Anyway, I say enjoy what you like, good music is good music whether it was produced yesterday or 100 years ago.

Most new music is god awful. Its not even music. Its a music bed that one person made, lyrics anothet person put to them, and vocals a third karaoke singer recorded (with the aid of a computer to "sound good". The music youre talking about is actual music, real lyrics and music written played and recorded by the band youre listening to.

Stick with the old stuff. Thats the good stuff. Todays is crap.

I loathe new music I loathe new music.. Though perhaps because my mom heard older music (for the 80s, we are both inside Big Hair Bands) to look at was little and even even today. Though I don't find out where my love designed for music that mimics Aerosmith's 1973 album started. I think it's exactly that each person gets this liking to a certain type of favorite songs, and my type typically older music. I also for instance the sound of it. Music more recently has this new sound to barefoot running. Like it's too fresh without having it dirty enough. Maybe oahu is the frequency at which you'll find it played.

I'm not for sure, but I will normally favor older music throughout newer music, unless a band hits theaters that mimics older favorite songs, then I would take love probability.

Music is something that is supposed to be enjoyed by all people no matter what race, color age, etc. when I was growing up, I was a big rap fan. At night sitting in a car with my mother, slow jams or smooth jazz would come on and she would always tell me " you can't listen to that hard stuff all the time. Sometimes you want something laid back to listen to".I was 16 then, I'm 30 now. I still live by that. Nothing wrong with you enjoying older music. I'm 17 I like old music blues is absolutely one of my favorite genres. It's not weird at all people may think it is but each person can only like what they like. When I was a teen, the 'American Graffiti' and 'Happy Days' crazes were going strong, so I mostly listened to '50s rock. Did not care for any 'modern' music of the time, such as Elton John or Olivia Newton John. It's no big deal.

Going down the right path from the list I just viewed. Here's a few more good bands for you red hot chili peppers, acdc, Johnny Cash. The bands that you and I have listed realied on their own talent, to make their music. Writing their own lyrics. Now music is made cheap, it is all about image and how cool you look, instead of how you sound. If attracts a wide range of audience easily and quickly. Due to repetitive cycle of boy bands and girl band's through shows such as x factor, new talent is becoming harder to find, since there is so much rubbish music.

You are free to listen to any type of music that you enjoy. I also enjoy older music, in the country, rock and pop genres. I feel that older music is more diverse and imaginative than today's music. Today's music all sounds too similar to me. Music has become big business and all the companies want to play it safe. No one wants to take a chance anymore and we end up with boring music. You go right ahead and listen to and enjoy the older music. If more people would do this, maybe the music producers would wake up and realize that we want more originality and creativity.

Of course it's not weird. I'm a similar age to you myself and I enjoy older music - dating back to even the 40's/50's. I'm not particularly a fan on the music of today either. There are to many electronic dance tunes on the charts that all follow a the same kind of tune. 'Pop' music is storming the charts and there is not much music of different genre's in the Top 40 which is kind of depressing. It's also terribly overplayed. I like to listen to The Beatles a lot. Sometimes bands that are modern but have an older touch to their music like the Arctic Monkeys.

At my school, pretty much everyonw listens to mainly 60s-90s music. It's considered weird if you ONLY listen to new stuff, if you don't listen to The Beatles, Stones, Queen, Nirvana etc. I listen to about 90% old stuff but I like some new stuff also.

Not in the least; I am 14, and I listen to music that is from very early 1900s, old rock, etc. Scott Joplin, Chuck Berry, the works. Listening to music from back in the day gives me the feeling that I am connected to that time period. So to answer your question, not at all. Music from the old days has soul.

I still listen to them and in addition, there are artists from the 20s, 30s, 50s, 80s, 90s to current that I enjoy; all genres. It is better to have an eclectic range than to narrow yourself. Try listening to some early blues singers like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. Have fun on your musical path.

I am in the same realm as you are only I m quite older. I search and search for good quality music (basically you can feel it more than hear it) but it always leads me back to the 60 s and 70 s music, and yeah, some good blues and 50 s to. Believe me, my ear is open for SOMETHING new but none of it has that feel and that s a shame. People tell me all the time how weird I am just because I don't listen to Ariana Grande or that stupid whip/nae nae song. Today's mainstream music is utter crap these days. There are a few decent artists that are mainstream that aren't terrible: Imagine Dragons, Fun., X Ambassadors, Coldplay, etc. But their slowly fading out. Try some Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Beatles, Cream, Bread, Eagles, CCR [Creedence Clearwater Revival], Queen, Simon and Garfunkel, and countless more, the list is seemingly endless. I always loved the protest music as it had a lot to say about what was wrong and funny enough is still mostly relevant like John McCutcheon, he has been around for a long long time but even has some very recent music. And if you wanna try something just a little bit wild check out Kenny Rogers' first band 'The First Edition', those psychedelic 60's and 70's had some of the coolest sounds that you just don't hear otherwise, like Jefferson Airplane [check out 'white rabbit'] or The Doors.

I listen to and enjoy basically all music genres, but there is something about old music that I absolutely love. As far as old music goes, I have always been particularly drawn to the big band/swing era for as long as I can remember. I also love classic rock (that's probably thanks to my dad), and as far as country goes, well, I really hate most of the new style stuff *cough*itsbasicallytownie/cityslickermusicnow*cough* but I love the old stuff.
There's just something about that old sound and that history and all the added emotions of a time long gone that just seems to somehow make the music so much more.

I should actually maybe revise my answer. Yes, to a lot of people, your taste in music will seem strange. But, as a wise man once said, "It's a good thing to be strange. Normalness leads to sadness."
Don't let all the boring, normal people put you off. You don't have to be a pompous jerk to them because their music taste isn't as fantastic as yours, but just enjoy your music. It's lovely to share in the enjoyment of art with others, but ultimately, the experience you have with art and music is yours and yours alone.

P.s. There are some amazing current artists/bands out there. You just have to look for them. The music playing on the radio station is just a tiny amount of "music" that's out there right now, and if you completely write off "modern music" according to that junk that's being pumped out on the radio, you will miss a lot of brilliant artists.

I was - and still am - into every kind of music you can think of: Pop, rock, alternative, blues, classical, dance, folk, easy listening, electronic, rap & hiphop, indie, gospel, jazz, Latin, new age, soul, funk, reggae, World music, and more.

But for me, it was a harder because when I was 16 it was the 1980s and we didn't have the internet and iTunes and Youtube and internet radio stations and all that fun stuff you kids nowadays take for granted.
We had tapes and records, and had to buy them at actual music stores.

If I heard something I liked, I've never cared what genre of music it is or what decade it's from.
And I'd spend the money to buy a cassette or album even if the store had to special order it for me.

To me, limiting yourself to just one era or type of music is like going through life wearing a blindfold.
You miss out on a lot, so I sincerely hope you keep exploring music and enjoying all it has to offer.

Perhaps some of this tripe may actually have some odd form of merit after all. When I was a kid growing up in the 1970's I listened to the rock that everyone else was listening to, but I was also listening to my parents records music that was made in the 40's, 50's and 60's. It was great stuff. I sat there and jammed to my dad's early Jazz records for hours and hours when I came home from school. He had great stuff. Jazz Blues, Rock. There's great music from every era, and there's music from every era that stinks. If you like Blues make sure you check out Robert Johnson, Keb Mo, Robert Cray, Led Zeppelin, Leadbelly, I don't know blues that well, but they make these large books which have titles of Jazz, Blues, Rock recordings, etc. I keep a few by my desk which list jazz titles.

I saw Muddy Waters twice and in one Concert at my University Muddy Waters, BB King, Willie Dixon and Bukka White were all there and it was the greatest concert of blues I ever saw. If music is any good it stands the test of time and the music of today that is still being played and liked in 50 years will be the music that is good. Musical taste should not be dictated by your friends or what is trendy but what you enjoy listening to. My father used to say I only have so many years to live and so many hours to spend listening to music so I want to listen to the music I love. In his case it was classical music, opera and folk music. he would also enjoy jazz and blues but very little rock. It took him years to convince him that the Beatles were good and he finally wrote said one day that they were very talented. But on e thing in common that the musicians you like is they all have soul and spirit to their music.

In a way you are weird, since your taste is different, but it is a better taste. With better taste I mean: a lot of especially young people don't in a way really have a music taste: they just listen whatever crap media (whether radio, tv or some "suggestion" feature in Spotify) tells them to listen. You've clearly grown over this phase already, explored other genres and found your real taste. It can still evolve, and it is probably only going to go more towards forgotten old artists/bands (i.e. get "weirder").

The music you cite is not old. Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi--that is old. There is even older music but it is not quite as interesting, at least not to me. None of it is weird, though.
