here's a suggestion... not far to travel from canberra is the region of the south coast of new south wales... there are lots of beautiful beaches and scenery with the added bonus of it being a big tourist area .... have a think about it instead of a capital city one of the advantages will be cheaper accommodation and the chance to meet real people not canberra people

To those people defending Canberra:

I feel it is hard to meet people as an au pair - I have met a lot of other au pairs, but not so many people who were born in Australia. My host family is German and has a lot of German friends. It is not that I don't like Europeans, I guess I just thought it wouldn't be hard to find Australian friends. I was one year in the U.S. and there I never really met other Europeans. I guess I have just become tired of Canberra. I live an hour from the center by bus, and buses don't always go often on weekends or evenings. And restaurants and shops seem to close early. I guess I had expected more of a "big city/capital feeling". I like that there are people in the streets in Sydney and Melbourne.

I can only tell you about Adelaide in South Australia. It is not the biggest city but it's less expensive to live in than Sydney or Melbourne. The best beach is at Glenelg and the climate is simliar to Perth. Summers have high temperatures but not as humid as the north of Australia. There are some nice natural areas in the Adelaide Hills - some of my cousins work in ecotourism there. You can get a ferry to Kangaroo Island which is very popular with tourists and where my mother was originally from.

South Australia does have some strong German heritage from the 1800s. If you look at the names of some places in the Adelaide Hills you can see that they are of German orivgin, such as Hahndorf. But that was quite some time ago. Adelaide is a bit quieter than the other cities. The main shopping place in the CBD is Rundle Mall but the shops are not great and it needs a lot of updating.

I agree with the others that people in Canberra would be fairly typical Aussies. Maybe you were expecting something different or picked up the idea of something different before coming here. In other parts of the world they seem so far behind in their image of Australians. We're a modern people and these days fairly multicultul.

Why would you want to meet real Australians? Talk about lowering your standards and meeting unworldly people. Meet some, albeit fewer, sophisticated ones. Those would be in the bigger cities. Otherwise, what's wrong with hanging out with fellow Europeans?

Tasmania is very very beautiful and was a lot warmer than england (i was there in autumn and it was 30 degrees, but freezing at night), but you don't really get a big city feel anywhere- Hobart is about the same size as my tiny hometown.
I think Perth is a really good idea! I think it's a lot less touristy so you will be able to meet lots of locals.
Have you thought about the East Coast as well? The weather is gorgeous and everything is close together and very busy all the time, so you would be able to see lots of new things on days off.

Going by your description that can fit a load of locations, but if you look at NSW, coastal areas, you can co south or north.

I used to love scuba diving over there, and would travel south, I think my furthest point was Batemans Jervis Bay.

For you look at Wollongong or the Central Coast like The Entrance and alike.
