get either eqn in terms of one variable

so you can write x-3y= -1 as .... x= -1+3y

plug in that eqn into the other equation so you get...
2(-1+3y) - 5y = 8 ...... this is then distributed to .... -2 + 6y - 5y = 8

simplify by adding like terms to get..... y=10

plug y=10 into any of your eqn's to solve for x.

so ill use this eqn x=-1+3y
plug in 10 for y and solv for x..... x=-1+3(10) which is 29

so x=29 and y=10

y = 10
x = 29
